Roadmap (WP7)

Techno-economic assessment of EU scenarios for hydrogen storage and roadmap towards demonstration and implementation in the EU

In this work package, the role of hydrogen storage in porous reservoirs within a future European hydrogen system will be assessed by using a spatio-temporal optimization model implemented with the open-source framework FINE (Framework for Integrated Energy System Assessment). Thereby, equipment requirements and the capital and operating costs for different representative types of hydrogen storage scenarios will be evaluated with specific focus on surface and subsurface hydrogen handling at underground storage sites.

The levelized cost of hydrogen considering the whole supply chain, from production to final use, will be estimated. Environmental risks and challenges in market design and EU-regulations concerning underground storage of renewable hydrogen will be assessed. Finally, a roadmap addressing the implementation of large-scale underground storage of renewable hydrogen in Europe will be derived.
